Why see a Registered Dietitian?
A Registered Dietitian (RD) holds a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, completes a 1200+ hour Dietetic Internship, and passes a national exam by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. RDs also pursue a Master's degree, and some get advanced certifications. Dietitians are the only practitioners qualified to perform Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). An RD can also be in-network for some insurance providers.
A nutritionist can be anyone with varying credentials, or no credentials at all. In states without specific licensure laws, virtually anyone can use the title "nutritionist" regardless of their education or training. While there's a wealth of nutrition information out there, misinformation is abundant. It's advisable to seek guidance from a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) for reliable, science-backed advice.
